I've owned my 2000 400 EX for over a year now. I bought it box-stock used and in very good condition. Since the purchase, I have put on a set of AC nerfs and a set of Bandit XC tires on all around (22" in rear and 23" in front). I use the quad primarily for rocky trail rides here in NM.
I love the power and speed of this machine. It is nimble and fast. I stand 5' 9" tall, and find my ride position to be very comfortable. Ground clearance is acceptable, and I have no trouble keeping up with my 4WD riding buddies--even in snow and mud! The air cooled 4 stroke is a very dependable/bullet proof engine, and other than oil changes, I have done nothing to it.
All and all--out of the box, the 400 EX is the most fun you can have on 4 wheels--add some cheap aftermarket parts, and you'll be unstoppable.
Ride safe.
